I programmed the backing track for this bit of Rock-Diddley-Aye on Cubase, using a Roland JV30 Keyboard + an Alesis SR16 drum machine. This Horslips medley always goes down well and livens up any gig!
Featuring one of Horslips best loved Tradrock guitar riffs "Dearg Doom". This is based on a traditional old Irish tune called "O'Neills March". The band excellent guitar player Johnny Fean has come up with an absolute classic guitar riff for this one.
Also in there is the classic "Trouble" riff which is originally played on the flute, "King of the Fairies" a haunting old Irish medley too and also there's a bit of a popular track in Ireland called the Fury's "Lonesome Boatman" thrown in for good measure. The original Lonesome Boatman, played on tin whistle is one of the most haunting tunes you'll ever hear I think.
Dedicate this one to Johnny Fean and the boys!
If you like the sounds and would like to investigate more, get the Best of Horslips double CD which contains the tracks above in full and tons of other original material ranging from the aforementioned Trad Rock stuff, to more traditional tunes.
You can fall in love with this band and many have done! Excellent musicianship by all band members - these guys learnt their instruments in the true "old fashioned" way as they might look upon it these days. Not a tab in sight :).
Instruments used include fiddle, flute, whistles, electric mandolin, bodran, electric guitar, acoustic, electric fiddle ...
Many of their albums are concept albums and tell a story as the songs play through. A truly unique sounding band and if you are ever in Ireland ask a seasoned musician about Horslips. If you wanna check out some other classic Irish trad stuff try a search on Amazon for Planxty and the Bothy Band.
