UniGTR+ Tip: Don't overlook your choice of string and settle for anything. As often mentioned, your choice in guitar strings is vital to get right no matter what instrument or gear you decide on.

So spend a bit of time getting this department right - the key is informed experimentation.

Here are my recommendations, don't forget to read our Guitar Tuning - Lock Yourself In - for further detailed help.

Acoustic Guitar Strings

Here's a very good Acoustic Guitar set that I use and recommend:

Yes indeed, strings are the lifeblood of any instrument, so take the time to experiment with strings 'til you find the right ones for you and your style. Strings are part of the very foundation of your sound - don't settle for anything but the best.

Guitar String Tips Experiment until you find the type that suits you and your style.
Guitar Sound Tips Try using Steel Strings for a different sound.
Guitar Tuning Tips Tune your guitar each time you use or change the key with a Capo.
Guitar String Tips Experiment with Open Tunings to open up a whole new world. Try the Amazon search box for more info. Guitar String Tips If your really stuck for cash, it's worth boiling an old set of strings to clean and add a bit of life to them ;-(.

Here's another good choice made by the legendary company Martin - Plenty of Pro's choose and use these:

For Nylon strings try Martin M260 80/20 Bronze Ball End Regular Tension Classic Guitar Strings

Electric Guitar Strings

Here's the electric guitar strings I use and recommend:

Ernie Ball Electric Guitar Strings width=100 height=101

Ernie Ball 3223 Nickel Super Slinky Electric Guitar Strings 3-Pack

Gauges 9-11-16-24w-32-42. Nickels are the most popular of the Ernie Ball Slinky guitar strings. They're made from nickel-plated steel wire wrapped around tin-plated hex-shaped steel core wire. They produce a well-balanced all-around good sound. Ernie Ball strings are precision manufactured to the highest standards and most exacting specs to assure consistency, optimum performance, and long life. Ernie Ball is the pioneer of rock and roll guitar strings. Setting the standard for the industry has enabled Slinky electric guitar strings to become the world's top selling brand. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, and Slash are among the long list of Slinky players.

  • Guitar String Tips Once again, experimentation is the key here. Try a really heavy set for tone, but don't expect to bend 'em like Albert ;-).
  • Guitar String Tips Make sure you check to see if you need strings with or without a ball-end! Certain guitars such as those fitted with a Floyd Rose use their own type of string without a ball-end. Most standard Strats and the like use ball-end strings - just be sure to double-check before you order.
I also sometimes use and recommend... D'Addario Regular Electric Guitar Strings They're very twangy when new great for Country!

Guitar Info and Repair Guides

If you are in control of your instrument, tuning problems, electrics and so on, you don't have to worry so much about it, and you can get on with playing your gig, confident that you can deal with any problems if they arise.

So I think it's well worth it to learn as much as you can about your instrument. Here's the type of stuff you need to know Electric Guitars: The Illustrated Encyclopedia

For more general Guitar Tuning and Maintenance info, you could try the Guitar Player Repair Guide I think it's important to gain this type of guitar knowledge yourself and be able to cope with at least the basics.

Electronic Guitar Tuner

Here's a pro Guitar Tuner I recommend and use - vital for a pro approach on stage.

Boss TU-12 Tuner

Boss TU-12 Tuner

The Boss TU-12 Tuner is designed for precision tuning. This Boss tuner has high-visibility sharp/flat LED indicators, tuning meter, and adjustable pitch. Switchable between guitar/bass and autochromatic tuning. A built-in condenser mic on the Boss TU-12 makes acoustic instrument tuning easy.

  • Guitar Playing Tip The less you have to worry about this type of thing on stage, the better you can concentrate on your playing.
  • Guitar Playing Tip It's been scientifically proven that this attitude applies to any endeavor - You might be interested in some of the Barry Green - W. Timothy Gallweys "Inner Game" books concerning this matter. You can find them at Amazon.
  • Guitar Tuner Tip To avoid picking up external noise and interference with an Electronic Tuner, you can disconnect the built-in microphone. You gain in one area but there is a downside - This VOIDS the warranty and means you will need to plug any instrument directly into the tuner to use it.
  • Guitar Tuner Tip If your useful in the electronics department, you could have the best of both worlds and fit a small on/off switch to the built-in Mic.
  • Guitar Tuner Tip Don't become too dependant on an electronic tuner. Give your musical ear as well as your eyes a workout. You'll find that a tuning fork or an electronic gadget capable of giving you concert pitch, comes in very handy now and again.

See Tuning Tips for more guitar tuning details.
